Surfing 20 inches above the water

Webman's picture

Categories:    -Misc-

New trend is coming to wave surfing. A long fin with elevating wings makes the surfboard float in the air above the water. The weight of the surfer and board is pushed by water below the wave face, which is more condense and stable therefore provide the required elevation.

Geezer

I call shenanigans!

Cool!!

Cool!!

:D

<3 Vast - candle in the background.

its real, hydrofoil, go

its real, hydrofoil, go watch bilabong odessy for a more detailed explanation.

This was shown in "Step into Liquid"

See the movie "Step Into Liquid" (released in 2003!) for a LOT more about this. CLUE: it isn't new in 2006...

fucking ancient.

fucking ancient.

Old news

anyone that surfs already new about this thing many moons ago!

this design looks slow

it looks cool, but too much of the thing is under the water and that creates a lot of friction resistance. a regular surf board just touches the surface without going under, lowerng the contact with the water. i'd say this thing is a lot slower for the smaller waves.

Its old

I seen people using a similar design behind ski boats over 10 years ago.. boring.

Agreed...but

I think they also tried it for a while with windsurfing too, but this may be a first for gravity-powered boards.

New?

Not really. Check out the documentary Step Into Liquid

old news

very old news, the guys name is Laird Hamilton and he's been playing with the cheese cutter for years...

been around a while

my father and I have been sky skiing for 9 or 10 years already, these guys took the idea.... www.foilfreaks.com

yeah, but your dad did not invent it or try it on a wave!

Hydrofoils have been around since the 1800's, and so what if they have been surfing with them for years, it is new to some people so lay off " i saw this last year, get a clue"  how 12 years old of you, wait a sec. you are twelve years old, go ahead.

use a dictionary!!!

they called it a "new trend", not a new invention. a trend can have a history hundreds of years old but can still be new, an invention or first application is something totally different, where in the article does it say it is a new invention? It is not your fault you can not read, the public school system has failed.

this has been around for

this has been around for awhile now. this is not exactly "new".

-_-

I saw these ages ago. WTF was wth the dork at the end.

Dork at the end!

HE HE, that dork at the end is also one of the most famous names in surfing. He´s part of the santa cruz boys, but bless you for not knowing, why not comment on something you know absolutely nothing about.....

dork at the end part deux

by the way, i built one of these from plywood, fibreglass and an old surfboard with rigid wakeboard bindings. Its damn hard even on flat water. My advice, buy a ready made/researched/perfected one and give it a go, its fun (mine worked flukily well, but of course snapped pretty quick)
