Water Over A Bridge

Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......now this is engineering!

This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany, as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg, near Berlin. The photo was taken on the day of inauguration.

The area around is flat

The area around seems totaly flat. I wander where the upper river is coming from. Water always try to find the lowest place so over time the two rivers should have united if in fact the area is flat

Upper waterway is a canal, not a river

From the description and the photo, it appears that the lower waterway is a natural river (the Elbe), but the upper one is a man-made canal. That would explain why they have not "united" over time.

waste of money?

The engineering is very cool and looks like a very interesting project o work on, but how beneficial is it? The maintenance is going to crazy, every crack, and what about Winter? Does it shut down and the water emptied? Besides to me it seems like a lot of money and work went into inferior transportation surface. A concrete bridge could host a bigger amount of traffic and thus a better surface to move much more products to their destination than a water bridge. Boats aren't fast. Any Agreement? This is my opinion. seems like a waste of money

Sure sure

Yeah it's a lot of money, but I think this is about a little more than transport. Its a unifying symbol between two formally seperated places. Sure a concrete bridge could be built and some cars could drive on it. But why not take a scenic boat journey thats, you know.. not boring.

Agreed! I think it is actually very bad Engineering!

I'm sure that it is "technically" a very difficult Engineering feat, and it sure looks really cool, but engineering is supposed to be about solving problems in the most efficient manner. Seems a much better and cheaper solution would be to let channel merge into one side of the elbe and on the other side of the Elbe let the channel continue by controlling the amount of water that goes back into the channel. Boats could still navigate through it this way. Heck, for 500 Euros you could even create a small dam and generate some hydro electric power out of it. Perhaps I am mis-informed, but wouldn't that be better engineering?

Try making the water go uphill!

The channel can't merge with the river if the river is at a lower level because all the water would drain out of it! The channel is a perfectly legitimate means of transport, just like a road. If you have a channel on either side and you want them to merge then you build an aqueduct. It's not bad engeneering, the romans built them two thousand years ago!

When to build an aqueduct

Yes, what we have here is an aqueduct. Usually aqueducts are not built over fresh water though, but rather to transport fresh water across land. It's kind of like carrying a big bag of sand from one side of the desert to the other.

No bad engeneering

The canal _has_ to be over the Elbe because it's on a different level than the river. The canal is man-made and very long. To be on the same level in different regions, it has to be lifted up in some areas.

Gravity

Not really sure why the canal can't be lowered to the same level as the Elbe. Just let gravity do it's thing...

It's artificial

This is not a river, it's a canal. It is going through many different regions on different levels, that's why there are sluices and lifted-up canals…

AQUADUCT OVER THE ELBE

Is it a one-way transportation? How do the boats go back without fear of head-on collision in the narrow channel?

No it's two-way

It's only for inland waterway transportation, those ships are very small. I do not know this brigde personal, but maybe there are traffic signal lights…

Sure, why not? Freeway has Byway and ramps, why not river? Better yet, if one has money to burn? But this does not look like German wisdom here!

Obviously, the bridge needs to support it's own weight as well as the weight of the water. But, did engineers need to consider the weight of the boats???

Great question. I think that the boats float in a balance point in which the amount of water that is missing because of the boat (pushed aside) is equal in weight to the weight of the boat. So the engineers did not have to consider the boat weight. Am I wrong here?

The weight of the displaced water is equal to the weight of the boat. So, the weight of the boat is moot.

I think engineers considered the weight of the boats, if not the bridge would collapsed during the time of those pictures, don't think so?, also i have heard about other of these channels before, also with special elevator systems like in the Panama channel. Germans are awesome.

Round about

Picture shows a wide flat area... why not to build a less environmental impacting round-about? Or a simple 4 ways cross with traffic lights and a pedestrian passage?

You people do not read.

Read the Snopes article on why this crossing was made. IT wasn't just made to be 'pretty' or 'nice' or 'a cool engineering project'. It actually affects commerce and harbor access. Quoting Snopes:

Taking six years to build and costing around half a billion euros, the massive undertaking will connect Berlin's inland harbor with the ports along the Rhine river. At the center of the project is Europe's longest water bridge measuring in just shy of a kilometer at 918 meters. The huge tub to transport ships over the Elbe took 24,000 metric tons of steel and 68,000 cubic meters of concrete to build. The water bridge will enable river barges to avoid a lengthy and sometimes unreliable passage along the Elbe. Shipping can often come to a halt on the stretch if the river's water mark falls to unacceptably low levels.

Maybe we should of hired these guys to do the Big Dig in Boston At least it works as designed, not falling apart and wasn't $3.b over budget

Where is the water displaced

Where is the water displaced to if the weight of the boat is not included in the design?

Answer

A boat does not skim on water, it moves within it. The Bridge is not sealed at each end so water is not going to rise over the edges. How many canal edges have you seen flood as a boat moves past?
