In Value Stock Investing, Quality is Job One

Categories:    -How to-   -Misc-

How much financial bloodshed is necessary before we realize that there is no safe and easy shortcut to investment success? When do we learn that most of our mistakes involve greed, fear, or unrealistic expectations about what we own? Eventually, successful investors begin to allocate assets in a goal directed manner by adopting a realistic Investment Strategy... an ongoing security selection and monitoring process that is guided by realistic expectations, selection rules, and management guidelines. If you are thinking of trying a strategy for a year to see if it works, you're due for another smack up alongside the head! Viable Investment Strategies transcend cycles, not years, and viable Equity Investment Strategies consider three disciplined activities, the first of which is Selection.

Road Rage Cards: 'Relax — and let the flip-book do the screaming!'

Categories:    -Design-   -Gadgets-   -How to-   -Tips&Tricks-   -Weird-

Invented by Mika Larson, who sells them from her website named — surprise! — roadrage.com. You get a spiral-bound book of 8- by 11-inch cards, each with one of 43 messages, for $19.99. But here's the stroke of genius: on the back of each card is the mirror-image of the message so the doofus ahead of you can read it in their rearview mirror.   [via Joe Sharkey's "On The Road" column in the May 23 New York Times] Posted originally at bookofjoe: Road Rage Cards: 'Relax %u2014 and let the flip-book do the screaming!' and republished here by th

Categories:    -Art-   -How to-   -Tips&Tricks-   -Misc-   -Open Source-

Investment mistakes happen for a multitude of reasons, including the fact that decisions are made under conditions of uncertainty that are irresponsibly downplayed by market gurus and institutional spokespersons.  Losing money on an investment may not be the result of a mistake, and not all mistakes result in monetary losses. But errors occur when judgment is unduly influenced by emotions, when the basic principles of investing are misunderstood, and when misconceptions exist about how securities react to varying economic, political, and hysterical circumstances. Avoid these ten common errors to improve your performance: 1.

Foamhenge

Categories:    -Art-   -Design-   -How to-   -People-   -Weird-

Peter Carlson wrote about it and its creator in a front-page story that appeared in the April 24 Washington Post Style section. Long story short: Artist Mark Carlson created a full-size Styrofoam replica of Stonehenge in six weeks in the spring of 2004. It took the Druids a bit longer to put up their version — four centuries, in fact — but let's not be haters. You can see Foamhenge (above, with the artist and his dog Jake in the foreground) with your very own ojos in Natural Bridge, Virginia, "atop a verdant hill." Here's Carlson's story. Jurassic Lark What Do Dinosaurs and the Civil War Have in Common? Mark Cline's Art Mark Cline says his greatest artistic triumph is Foamhenge, a life-size reproduction of Stonehenge that he carved out of Styrofoam and erected in a field here.

Master Your Sleeves

Categories:    -Art-   -Design-   -Hilarious-   -How to-   -Tips&Tricks-   -Misc-   -Weird-

You know the feeling, when you need those long sleeves to stay up and they keep falling down. It's frustrating. And it always happens when your hands are wet or you have something in your hands that keeps you from sorting the runaways. Then you try to get them back where they belong with your teeths. Now you look stupid, don't you.The most frustrating situation is when one sleeve stays rolled and one doesn't. That's when you keep trying to get the rolled one to unfold. Some more maneuvers like that and they'll wait for you with the stray jacket. Where the sleeves are kept tightly in place.

How to Pick Music for Summertime

Categories:    -Art-   -How to-

Music during the summertime should remind you of what summer means to you. If it makes you happy, then you should pick something with a rather fast beat, and preferably mellow. If summer reminds you of sadness, or regret, pick something darker and louder than usual. Do not be afraid to try new types of music. If you usually like pop music like Rihanna or Ciara, maybe try Rise Against's new album. Or if your into metal, maybe try reggae or hip-hop. It's all up to you.If you are not satisfied with any music available, why not make your own. If you can play an instrument, this may be a great oppertunity to try something new.
